The Centre for Theatre Practices Jubilee was celebrated within the scheme
of the 7th International Theatre Festival 'Confrontations' .Włodzimierz Staniewski
- a curator of the Festival - planned it as an encounter of two theatre empires
- Russian and American

"On the Programme"

A few words about the programme. Meditating on the 7th edition of the festival I asked myself a question:
What implication has the process
of political and social changes, forming
our present cultural identity, for theatre? How do leaving the sphere of Russian influence and reorientation towards America influence our artistic life?
Not a long time ago, Russia, our closest neighbour, used to be present in Poland with its theatre very often. At least through its theatrical dissidents. Today the relationships seem to have frozen,
as if we were a little bit crossed with
the heirs of Stanislavsky, Meyerhold, Vachtangov and Tairov. Are we in the process of getting cured from the painful overcare, or are we committing the sin
of negligence? American theatre functions in our awareness as a constituent
of cultural, social and moral revolution
of the sixties and seventies: Ellen Stewart and her La Mama, Living Theatre, Richard Schechner and his Performance Group, and many more names - today legendary myths. However, what today good American theatre is we do not know because we have no chance to see it. When I asked myself a question where
we come from and where we go to,
my Daimonion of answers prompted: Propose a festival of two empires.
