THE
BURNT MILL

In 1898In 1989 the mill was purchased by 'Gardzienice
- Mill' company. Bearing in mind the local needs it was restored
to its original function. Its charming interior and its surroundings
were to be used for artistic purposes, too.

theatre workshops - the Mill, April 1994
Renovation was completed and it was fully functional as a mill.
The building was also used for concerts and theatre work.

On June 14th 1994 it burnt…..
"That
was an exceptional place"
Gazeta Wyborcza
Lublin, June 1994
Yesterday
morning the mill in Gardzienice burnt.
It was used as the place of meetings, workshops
and concerts organised by the famous Centre for Theatre Practices
"Gardzienice".
At 6.20 a.m. the Fire Guard in Piaski was alerted.
At 6.26 the first brigade arrived at the place. Within that time
the building with content of 1440 cubic meters
was totally immersed in flames.
In the rescue action 8 fire-engines and 33 firemen were involved.
The rescue operation was finished at 2.30 p.m. Unfortunately, it
was unsuccessful: the mill burnt down
to the ruins. (...)
The mill was built after the 2nd World . It was working
on the water drive, then on the electric drive. The Center for Theatre
Practices 'Gardzienice' bought it in 1989.
Beside its basic function (recently there were the preparations
for setting in motion the water drive),
it was the place of artistic meetings and concerts.
The last concert took place in June, the 4th, on the ocasion of
the ecological symposium(...)
"This was the special place" - reminds Marcin Mrowca from
"Hojra" band. 'We were guided through the inner spaces,
shown the machines in motion. It was the mill that played first,
then us'.
The cause of the fire was not determined.
